"I was born in Marshall County, Mississippi. Mother died when I was one year old. Pap went off with the Yankees
but he come back to us. Papa was a big man, part Indian. He was a brakeman on a train when I was fifteen years
old, and we come to Arkansas.
"He told us riddles. One I remember was:
'6 set 7 sprung From the dead The living run.'
"There was four of us children. We raised ourselves. My parents' name was Peter Brooks and Lucy Brooks. My
father said he was owned by Alfred Brooks and he called his wife Miss Puss.
"I cooked, washed, and ironed since I been in Arkansas."
