"Aunt" Mary's owner was Mr. John Lawsen, a Marris County planter. According to her story, her parents were bornin Monroe County (Georgia), and were brought to Marris County a number of years before the war.

She never heard her mother or father speak of being mistreated by their former owners. She was a very small girlduring the War Between the States and remembers very little that occured during that period, but she does distinctlyremember when the Yankee soldiers invaded the country in '65 and that hard times were suffered by the whites andblacks during the period of reconstruction.

She says that freedom went to "some Niggers heads" and "ruint 'em", and she has "heard her maw an paw tell thatthe slave-time Niggers were better off than the free Niggers."
