Stewart, Mary

Bibliography: Personal Interview with Aunt Mary Stewart.

A very interesting character in this locality is Aunt May Ann Stewart of Harmony, who celebrated her 104th birthday September 17, 1937.

Aunt Mary advises anyone that if they desire to live until 104 years of age and still be active, as Aunt Mary is, eat plain foods, take reasonable exercise, do not worry and spend time in reading the Bible.

It is interesting to note that Aunt Mary has lived under the administration of all Presidents of the United States except six. She is active, reads and sews without the aid of glasses, is lively and happy.

Aunt Mary was born near Martinville, Morgan County, as she says, "when the county was wild, wooded and living was very primitive."

She was the daughter of Andrew and Liza Shular, who were pioneers. Her father and mother died when she was young, and her uncle reared her. Aunt Mary was the only one of the family to marry and she outlived her three husbands. William Stewart, a civil war veteran being her last husband. She learned to read late in her life, having been taught by a rural carrier working out of Greencastle, who stopped at her home long enough each day to hear her recite her lesson. She has read the Bible through seven times.
