Pate, Charlotte

Know all men by these presents that I John H. Vermillion of the County of Smythe, and the state of Virginia, have manumitted emancipated and set free, and by these presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a Negro woman slave named Charlottle (sometimes called Charlotte Pate), and I hereby declare her the said Charlotte to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights, and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to visit her. She the said Charlotte hereby emancipated is a woman of dark complexion, about five feet high, and about forty-seven years of age, and formerly belonged to William B. Charlton. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 13th day of May, One thousand eight hundred and forty Eight.

Virginia: In Pulaski County Court the 6th day of September, 1848. This Deed of Emanoipation was presented in court proven by the oath I. B. Alexander, B.F. Wyson and Lynch A. Currin, three of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

Continued Deed of Manumission

State of Virginia: Pulaski County to wit:

I, Lynch A. Currin, Clerk of the County Court in and for the County and State aforesaid, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true copy from the records in my office. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court this 18th day of September, 1858.
