"My parents was both in the Civil War. He was Levi Berthy and she was Misson Berthy. Mid Hill was mother's
owner. She said he was better to them than most owners. He never whooped 'em. Mother was real light and father
was dark. I was born in Pinola County, Mississippi. I had a stroke five years ago. I can't walk a step for two years
now. My parents didn't let us hear them talk, they sent us out to play, then they died before they got old. I never
heard much of their own lives. I live with my daughter and her husband. I don't get Welfare aid."
